Description

(2016), graphite pencils on paper, 5.5"x10.5" backed with digital frame.

With Fire standing for will-power, the individual’s sense of self and the life-force the 2 of Fire gives us a situation where the element gets doubled up, i.e. it gets to react to a similar impulse. For will this means that two impulses clash and immediately there is a struggle for which one will win out. No one likes to be pulled in different directions at the same time, so very soon one drive wins out over the other.

Traditionally we see a man contemplating his surroundings with one wand (the symbol of fire grasped firmly in his hand) and the other wand standing next to him to emphasize the power and the duality aspect of the card.

I chose a more dynamic and contentious motif in showing two arms trying to wrestle each other into submission before a background of lightning striking to show the potentially explosive nature of the contest between the two forces of will vying for supremacy. I kept the title "Dominion" from the Crowley/ Harris deck and the lightning references back to the two Tibetan dorjes or thunderbolts that his 2 of Wands depicts.

When pulled or in a spread the card means that we need to come to grips with the concept of power, force and violence in a constructive manner. We can either choose to give in to our aggressive impulses and start fighting with everyone or we can use our drive in a more constructive, perhaps friendly competitive manner. You may also feel as if you'd been given twice the drive or courage that you usually possess and feel capable of taking on tasks that would have daunted you before.

When drawn for a question about relationships or business it may warn you that you are overwhelming others with your own forcefulness. Even if you feel you are tapping into your energy to support someone else they may feel pushed aside, or you may do so for selfish reasons. You may also be locked in a battle of wills with someone who doesn't share your goals.

In a blockage or challenge position the card may indicate that you need to take a step back and that direct confrontation or taking the bull by the horns may only result in fruitless fighting and destruction. Perhaps you need to take a more indirect path to get what you want and seek to cooperate rather than to confront.
