(2010) 2" x 3.5" for the pendant, silver art clay (cut, carved, fired, enameled, antiqued, polished and burnished), 2 pearl cabs, copy of a Syrian coin, bezel wire, silver wire, transparent turquoise enamel, pearls, aquamarine beads, silver beads, fireline, silver clasp
This is another one of my coin copies I got recently. This coin is a tetradrachm that was minted on the occasion of the wedding of Antiochus VIII Grypus ("hook-nose") of Syria to Cleopatra Tryphaena of Egypt in 124 BC.
The couple had five sons: Seleucus VI Epiphanes, the twins Antiochus XI Epiphanes and Philip I Philadelphus, Demetrius III Eucaerus, and Antiochus XII Dionysus. The couple also had a daughter called Laodice.
In 116 BC Antiochus half-brother and cousin Antiochus IX Cyzicenus returned from exile and a civil war began. Cyzicenus' wife, also named Cleopatra, was a half-sister of Tryphaena and was killed in a dramatic fashion in the temple of Daphne outside Antioch, on the order of Tryphaena.
Cyzicenus eventually killed Tryphaena as revenge. The two half-brothers then divided Syria between them until Grypus was killed by his minister Heracleon in 96 BC.
Interesting times, confusing names, family slaughter... What can I say? Ancient empires are fun!
Despite the gruesome stories, I wanted something light-hearted and Mediterranean with a distinct Hellenistic feel to it, so I chose sea-green enamel in a Greek key pattern complemented with white pearls and aquamarine for an elegant and summery color scheme.
I also love the solution I found for attaching the necklace to the pendant: two curled wires go round the outside of the silver setting for the coin forming two loops at the top that hold the strings for the necklace.
As an avid coin collector, I found this and your Roman necklace incredibly interesting! I myself have been saving some Thai baht coins of varying sizes to eventually make into jewellery.
Thank you! It's a really nice challenge, because you can get inspired for your setting by the cultural context of the coin. I hope you can fashion something beautiful out of your collection, too!
