(2010), 9"x12", pencil on paper

Birthday present for my husband. It's about time I drew a crocodile. This one is still a baby and as cute as it gets!

The original photo that served as a reference was taken by the lovely :iconsiggystuff: who was very kind in giving me permission to use it.

Just so you know, I didn't hold them captive. They lived in a huge retention pond where I worked for years. It was right next to Florida's Intracoastal Waterway …

I used to raise those guys … as my 'pets' — not prospective food and clothing.

A splendid rendition, Eleonore. Thank you for sharing.

Very cool! I love reptiles in general, but gators have a special place in my heart (see my moniker here...) they are really smart and socially complex! I think you were fortunate you could be around them and interact with them like that!

It was fun drawing this little feller - learned so much about him this way - the way the teeth are set into the jaws, the patterning of the scales and how the harder plates on top of his head are so different from the softer, lighter skin on his underbelly...

You read like someone aware, Eleonore … those who know little of them would be awestruck by the things I know they're capable of. Their intelligence in action would blow most peoples minds.

Thank you. I learned so much, like that baby crocs apparently have a black spot on each of their belly scales...Who would have known, apart from reptile scientists (and purse-and-belt-makers).

So cute! Wish there were baby gators here XD But am actually glad the only place I'd find em here is in the ZOO... I'd hate to see grown ups roaming the sewers or something OO

Creeepy... I can't imagine waking up, looking at the window, only to see a gator taking a morning stroll down the lane, or swimming in the pool O.O

Wow, absolutely fabulous! I do love your animal drawings, but I think you really outdone yourself with this. All the detail! The eye! The different kinds of skin! And it's extremely "colourful", if this doesn't sound weird - or rather, all the different shades of grey are simply breathtaking. Congratulations to this wonderful piece!!! Your husband is one lucky guy.

Thank you so much! I was amazed studying the skin how many different types of scales a crocodile really has, from the white square ones on his belly to the mottled lumpy ones on his back...
