Peacock Paisley by Ellygator Peacock Paisley by Ellygator
(2009) 9"x 3.5", Size 15 seed beads (matte and glossy black, matte and glossy metallic green iris) Delicas (glossy black, matte metallic green iris, 14k rose gold), size 15 hex beads (glossy black), Sternocera aequisignata wings, green and black dichroic glass bead, nylon thread.

This one was a new technique and experiment for me and was quite labor intensive. The whole wings-and-paisley arrangement is mounted on a netted bracelet made from matte black and green size 15 seed beads for stability. I then used brick stitch to make the paisley-shaped picot-edged "frames" for the beetle wings, drilled holes in the wings to stitch them to the netted bracelet and fastened the paisleys over and around them. I then stitched extra wings into the gaps between the paisleys to hide the netting in the background.

The closure for the bracelet is a green dichro bead with the same intense green iridescence as the beetle wings. I really love the intense metallic shimmer and the somewhat organic feel of the varied paisley shapes

This is absolutely stunning! I don't wear jewlery but something like this would make me change this habit.

I've been looking over your beadwork cuffs, and I have to say you have an amazing sense of color and pattern! This one really qualifies for high drama, IMHO!

Holy Mother of Pearl! The idea of executing a paisely design with those ingredients is mindblowing! (And I always loved parameciums. They make such wonderful pets.) Fabulous!

Pets? Really? Now I kind of feel bad using their wings, which of course means, beetles died at some point during the process. What do they eat? How do they behave?

Are we talking about the same microscopic one-celled animals? One step above the amoeba. They eat pizza and behave rudely at foosball matches.

Okay, I keeeed I keeed.

Oh, paramecium as in paramecium caudatum. In German there is a cute name for them: Pantoffeltierchen, which translates as slipper - as in house slippers - beasties

Yessss! I can see them as slippers. When i was a kid and saw neckties and scarves with the "paiseley" pattern, I thought, "What beautiful germs!" Beasties is a cute description. Paramecium Pizzaola (Italian Beasties)

That is just... Absolutely amazing... I can only imagine how beautiful that must be up close and in person. It has always amazed me how it is that we liken beetles to jewels when beetles are often the more beautiful and dazzling.

Thank you. I was doubtful at first about buying them, but they are supposed to be harvested in a sustainable manner, which finally convinced me to give in and make these wonderful natural creations part of one of my pieces. I have a small amount of wings that are much more blue in color, and I am still tossing around some design ideas for them...

Sustainability is good. :) I recently switched over to only purchasing foods that are local and organic, or at the very least organic, eating meat only every other day, and eating only meat that has not been fed on soy or corn, and of course cutting all products containing soy or corn out of my diet... It's been challenging as far as the preparation time it takes for me to make myself meals, having to plan everything in advance, but very very rewarding. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

That's really a good mission that more people should take up. I definitely choose organic when I can and now make one of my daily meals consist entirely of fresh fruit. I also found that in my area there are actually a few farmers' markets, so this year I will go there for as much shopping as I can instead of to the megamarts!

May I ask? 0.0 Is that small loop really reliable? The bracelet is so big & seems to be heavy.

I've stitched through it about 3 to 4 times, and normally the loops survive gentle daily wear quite well.

They are usually the point of greatest weakness when you happen to snag your bracelet on something, though. However, I can live with that, because I'd rather restitch a loop than repair a bracelet that's ripped right through its pattern...
