Pearl Moon by Ellygator Pearl Moon by Ellygator
(2014), 3.5" x 2.5" for the pendant, Silver Art Clay (cut, carved, fired, brushed and antiqued), moon shell, mother of pearl shell drop, white pearls, cognac pearls, silver beads, silver wire, bezel wire, Fireline

I've just come back from holiday in Florida with a nice little box full of found shells. Two little moon shells just felt like they should become part of a piece of jewelry. I set this one in the center of an abstract shape that reminds me a little of a cross between a sand dollar and a starfish - definitely a very organic form. That's why I also left the pendant unburnished and unpolished with just the soft satin hues that come from brushing off the sinter complemented by the warm grey notes of the antiquing with liver of sulfur.

I then completed the pendant with a small polished mother of pearl shell and picked up on the pearlescent effect of the drop in a mix of white and cognac beads separated by silver beads to complement the pendant.

Ah, you have discovered one of my weaknesses: freshwater pearls.  I love their asymmetry and natural beauty (the same reason I dislike faceted semi-precious stones--let the piece shine on its own) and I really love the similar wonky, organic feel of this piece.  The unusual silver setting has a gorgeous soft texture (makes me think of the Sinbad pendant, actually), and the tiny shell is the perfect touch to the much larger, dominant shell.  I'm not a big fan of brown in most cases, but the warm beads really bring out the natural glow in the pearls and silver.  I really ought to think of something negative/constructive to say, but this is just a superb piece.  It very well may be my favorite that you've done this year, and that's saying something!

Thank you! It's been a piece where the path of inspiration was such a simple one... spend 2 weeks on a wonderful beach hunting for shells, diving for starfish and sand dollars, and the rest pretty much falls into place by itself.

Originally I had wanted the silver wire to be a one-piece and to go from one "horn" up top to the other with a bail in the middle having the whole thing as a pendant. Then I found that the pendant had a tendency to slide over to one of the "horns" and the whole thing hung crooked. So I snipped the wire, shortened it a little and bent the remaining stubs into rings with a necklace strung around them. The white pearls were a given - seeing that the smaller pendant shell already had a mother of pearl sheen. I tried several other shades with them, but finally settled on the rich cognac color of the darker pearls as the tone that seemed to fit best.

Like you I love sweetwater pearls - much more affordable and much more organic than your traditional salt-water pearls - plus round pearls have so many imitations and knock-offs made from glass these days. With sweetwater pearls you usually get the real deal.
