Description

(2016), graphite pencils on paper, 5.5"x10.5" backed with digital frame.

In the 2s, each of the elements gets doubled up, i.e. it gets to react to a similar impulse. For Water we have two sparks of emotion and with a bit of mutual attraction going on we end up with love as the meaning of this card.

In a spread the card signifies happiness in love, sensuality, harmony and erotic attraction, the seeker usually looks for completion in union with someone else and the 2 of Cups may point to an important positive encounter and may end up in love and partnership.

Many decks show a man and a woman approaching each other and holding out a cup to one another to perhaps toast and celebrate their union in a kind of loving cup ceremony. I wanted to work with a subject that was closely related to water and chose a dance of a seahorse pair in softly swaying sea-grass.

During mating seahorses will join in morning dances until the female passes her eggs to the male for safekeeping and incubation. They continue their dancing rituals while he takes care of the babies until birth. Researchers speculate that because it takes females a lot of work producing eggs, which will eventually take up a third of her body mass, it was an evolutionary advantage to have the male take care of incubation so she could start working on her next clutch. The fact that they spend so much time on cementing their relationship, especially for fish, who are not really known for their ongoing parental roles in most cases once made them a symbol of partnership and monogamy.

Also, I love seahorses, and so being able to draw a dancing pair with all their complex courtship colors flashing was an absolute joy!

When drawn the card stands for union, happiness in love, sensuality, harmony, erotic attraction and trust. It shows the querent in a position where they are ready to open themselves up to someone else to experience acceptance, love, healing and mutual support, which will come their way. It is important to give and take in equal measure - hence the seahorses as a symbol of a fairly even distribution of duties!

In a blockage position the card can mean that you are in love with the idea of love and fail to really see your partner or that you are so wrapped up in an ongoing twosome you are in danger of going stale or missing out on other kinds of love and friendship outside of your pair-bond.

For a question regarding matters of thought and ideas the card could indicate that you find someone who "gets you" and the way your mind works. In business it could mean you are about to enter into a mutually beneficial partnership or that you are going to be in a job and working environment where people are very positive and accepting towards you and the way you do things.
