6 of Water, Happiness

Description

(2016), pencil on paper, 5.5"x10.5" backed with digital frame.

The 6s stabilize and order the unbridled and sometimes destructive energy of the 5s and are associated with the sun, with clarity, order and energy of life. We find our center, whether emotionally, rationally or physically to deal with the adversity we’ve encountered, learn lessons from it and go forward stronger and wiser for it.

For the element of Water the energy of the sun heightens our emotions to just pure, unconditional happiness. We find within us a wellspring of creativity, contentment, charisma, success and the ability to let ourselves go with the flow and to tap into synchronicity. Often it means that we are able to reconnect with the simple, pure and innocent happiness of childhood untainted by cynicism and by the emotional scars we received as we grew up.

In the Rider-Waite deck a boy presents a girl with a cup that is planted with a white star-like flower, which she accepts as she smiles at him. Five more cups similarly adorned with star-flowers surround the pair in a setting that seems ambiguous since part of it could be taken for a farm-yard, another for the entrance to some battlements or fortification. The Toth deck shows us a blend of surging golden lotus stalks raising from lively green and wavy waters with each of them releasing a sparkling crystal goblet from their flowers.

To keep the motif of child-like happiness and enjoyment I picked a scene in a sun-lit fountain were six children enjoy the sparkling jets of water as they splash around. Their parents may be sighing about the bigger picture of having to deal with a soaking wet toddler once the fun is over, but for the children just the enchantment and joy of being there counts as they immerse themselves in the experience of the element. The older girl may be watching some of the youngsters, so there is an element of caring and kindness in the card, too, but ultimately it is all about the bliss of the moment.

If drawn the card shows a return to one of those magical moments of happiness where you simply lived in the now and felt yourself as one with the world around you. You don’t have to expect any amazing strokes of good fortune or huge amounts of inspiration with this card. It could signify the simple joy of having someone brighten your day or to do the same for others, to reconnect with your inner child and goof around for a little. Perhaps you can tap into a happy memory from your past, let go of your inner cynic long enough to smile at some children playing around as you go for a walk or your dog jumping all over you as you come home. Just give in to your sense of enjoyment.

For a relationship-related question the card may indicate that you are approaching a friend or a partner in a spirit of sharing and child-like innocence or that they are prepared to connect with you that way. Be generous without tallying up if you get as much in return, be prepared to trust or perhaps revisit some shared happy memories from your past together. It will make your relationship stronger and give you a deep emotional feeling of sharing. It could also mean that you are reconnecting with a person from your childhood who you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while and that it will be a happy reunion.

For a business-related question you will be able to experience a deep sense of happiness and fulfillment in what you do. Be playful in the way you pursue your goals, think back to the dreams and aspirations you had as a child when you need to make decisions about where you want to go in your job or your career. You may also connect with someone from your past, perhaps from your childhood or school days for a new opportunity.

If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are stuck in an infantile state where you are afraid to let go of your bliss while you expect others to take care of you and solve all of your problems. Growing up means taking responsibility and welcoming those moments when we can let our inner child out to play but also being able to postpone the hedonistic pleasures of indulgence in the moment in pursuit of more long-term goals. It could also mean that you are incapable of enjoying the little things in life because you are too focused on your long-term goals and feel you can only be truly happy once you’ve landed your perfect partner or your perfect job or got taken care of your retirement. Your dissatisfaction will make you feel like your life is all work and no play and you’ll be losing out.
