The 8s are under the auspices of Mercury and share some of its quicksilvery mental acuity. The cards offer sudden insights, but also share a sense of nervousness and of mental hyper-sensitivity.

If the inventors of the Tarot had known about Attention Deficit Disorder, this card would be it. You are so hyper, you simply cannot stay on one task, instead you are pulled in multiple directions and in the end very little gets accomplished. In some cases the distractions do not come from within, but you seem to be surrounded by people who feel destined to offer unsolicited advice and opinions slowing you down and meddling in your affairs.

If this card has one message it would be to slow down, to re-evaluate what needs to get done and to refuse to get side-tracked from your plans.

The Rider Waite deck has a dark-haired woman in a red dress tied up with grey ropes and a blindfold over her eyes. She stands in a marshy landscape with a hill and a castle behind her. She's surrounded by eight swords, the tips of which have been rammed into the ground around her. The Thoth Tarot shows a series of six horizontal shorter, almost dagger-like swords, some of them jagged or curved. Two long, rapier-like swords are laid over them vertically against a dull red and dark purple background, indicating that the straight lines of the main swords are disturbed and crossed by the jagged and uneven movement of the smaller weapons standing for distractions and muddled thinking.

For my card I wanted to go back to the element of Air and drew a hawk, an animal that incorporates Air, harried and disturbed by a group of 8 crows that dive down to distract it and draw it off its prey and out of their territory. The purpose of the hunting predator gets side-lined as he has to avoid his attackers. The crows come from different directions, some close to the hawk, some still higher up among the clouds.

In a spread the card indicates that what you thought was a clear focus on a goal becomes muddied, sidelined and disrupted. The disturbances may arise in your own mind through a sense of nervousness, conflicting thoughts and the inability to concentrate. They could also come from the outside where others weigh in on your plans and offer conflicting advice until you cannot see the path ahead any more. The Rider Waite deck emphasizes the sense of blindness and entrapment that comes from this kind of interference. The Crowley-Harris deck shows the sense of frustration and derailment that goes along with it.

For a relationship-related question the card may indicate that you are overly critical of one another. Instead of moving together towards a common goal you are tripping each other up. You may also feel unsure or nervous about expressing your feelings, perhaps because you are anticipating being rejected or because you are not really sure about where you want the relationship to go. Perhaps others like family or friends are meddling in an important relationship and are trying to impress their judgment and advice on how you should handle things. You need to figure out what's going on and what you want and then enlist your partner's help in getting there.

If the card comes up for a business-related question you are pulled in too many different directions and spread too thin to be really effective in your work. It could be that everyone wants a piece of you and is making demands, it could be that colleagues and bosses offer unsolicited advice or less than constructive criticism. It could be that you have so many grandiose plans and projects rattling around in your mind that you're having a hard time realizing any of them or formulating coherent plans. Take a deep breath, block out the distractions and try to regain your focus.

If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are distracting yourself with mindless thoughts and activities because you are procrastinating. You know what you want to do, but you are holding yourself back because the thought of commitment or of reaching your goal frightens you. You may be in the process of sabotaging yourself. It could also mean that you are intellectually trapped by pre-conceived notions or beliefs that have no foundation in reality. Your mind is stuck and unwilling to explore alternatives. You may have a hard time accepting criticism or advice from others.
