The court cards are leaving space for a number of interpretations in a spread. Often they are read as actual people having an impact on the querent's life, who share characteristics of the element they are associated with and hold a certain social or familial "rank". However, they can also be aspects of the querent's personality that either define him or her or that are currently suppressed.

The Rider Waite deck shows us a crowned man in red robes and a green and golden mantle adorned with salamanders on a throne. He holds a wand as he looks calmly to the side. Behind him an orange tapestry shows a pattern of rampant lions and salamanders biting their own tails. In the Crowley-Harris deck the seated kings are transmuted into much more dynamic knights riding horses and the Knight of Wands charges forward on a rearing black stallion brandishing a torch while flames burn all around him and merge seamlessly with the rich scarlet of his mantle.

I wanted to return to the more stable power of the traditional and mature kings in my deck and for the Father of Fire chose an older man. Like the other characters from the Fire court he is adorned with beads and in lieu of the usual crown he wears a hat. I loved the way the brim seemed to shadow one of his eyes and in this he reminded me of the stories where Odin, the father of the gods disguises himself by using a hat to obscure the eye that he lost in his trials on the world-tree Yggdrasil. Life has lined the Father’s face, but his gaze is clear and his experiences have brought him to insight and wisdom.

In a spread the Father of Fire signifies a powerful, self-confident man who possesses a great level of self-awareness and integrity. He understands the importance of being true to himself and to be honest with himself and with others. When he commits he commits fully and does not hold back. As a leader he is utterly devoted to those entrusted to his care and always prepared to lead from the font, asking for nothing that he would not willingly do himself. He possesses great courage and is prepared to take risks to achieve his goals and to defend what he believes in. He can draw on his powerful charisma and will get others to rally behind him and his vision.

For a relationship-related question the card points to a powerful connection. The Father of Fire is a passionate lover and a proud father and protector of his family. He does not hold back and can have a bit of a fiery temper, for good or for ill. A connection under the auspices of this card will be both heated as well as committed and stable. As the Mother of Water is the quintessential mother figure and can point to the relationship of the querent to their mother, the Father of Fire is the archetypal father and can represent the querent’s connection to their father.

If the card comes up for a business-related question it means that you are reveling in your mastery of your chosen field and that you are on top of your game. You are enthusiastic and committed and more than capable of assembling and leading a team that will enjoy following you. You tackle problems with insight and intelligence and enjoy the excitement of a bit of competition. You are willing to take calculated risks to get what you want.

If the card stands for yourself it means that you should trust your instincts as a leader. You may be called upon to protect others. Strive to be completely honest with yourself and others. Follow your passion and be prepared to take risks if you need to. Be competitive, but fair and surround yourself with intelligent people of diverse opinions, listen to them and consider their ways of seeing the world before you make a decision.

If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are in danger of becoming rigid and tyrannical. Your convictions could degenerate into dogmatism and bigotry. There is a danger of losing your temper and becoming cruel and brutal in asserting your will without any empathy or regard for the needs of others. Alternatively you are in danger of losing your footing. The thrill of the chase or the excitement of taking risks and winning over others becomes so alluring that you are willing to gamble with your possessions, your health and well-being just for the challenge of it. You are burning your candle at both ends, but in the end you lack the ability to sustain your efforts.
